Breast Reduction
If you live in Fort Worth, Frisco, or Plano, Texas, you’re likely to hear about Dr. Michael Bogdan if you research breast enhancement surgeons. Although we tend to hear more talk about breast augmentation, Dr. Bogdan also specializes in creating beautiful, natural-looking results from breast reduction surgery. Women with overly large breasts — a condition called macromastia — can greatly benefit from breast reduction surgery. The procedure has one of the highest rates of patient satisfaction of all plastic surgeries, due to the physical and psychological relief it provides to women with very large, heavy breasts. It is important to note that Dr. Bogdan’s practice is exclusively cosmetic. As such, he does NOT participate in any insurance programs, and cannot work with insurance companies to cover a breast reduction.
No amount of online research can answer all of your questions as completely as an appointment with Dr. Bogdan. Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction is an appropriate procedure if you are self-conscious about large breasts, they are causing physical discomfort, they limit a physically active lifestyle, or a combination of these issues. Many breast reduction patients spend years dealing with symptoms associated with overly large breasts, including:
- Neck, back, and shoulder pain
- Posture problems
- Rashes and skin irritation under the breasts
- Painful indentations from bra straps
- Enlarged areolae
- Extensive sagging, stretched skin, stretch marks
Psychological reasons are just as compelling as physical discomfort for patients considering breast reduction. Like most plastic surgeons, Dr. Bogdan has heard breast reduction patients describe the unwanted attention they get because of the size of their breasts. Some of these women get teased as adolescents and feel the need to hide their bodies beneath baggy, shapeless clothing due to their self-consciousness.
Choosing Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, skin, and fat using incisions made directly on the breast. It is typically performed as an outpatient procedure utilizing general anesthesia.
The most common and most reliable form of the operation uses the anchor incision, also commonly used for breast lift. To help patients understand why this type of incision is needed, Dr. Bogdan created an animated video. As you’ll see, the surgery involves moving the nipple areolar complex without detaching it from its blood supply or sensory nerves.
Performing Breast Reduction

Anchor Incision
The anchor incision is the most common technique used in breast reduction because Dr. Bogdan can remove more breast tissue, fat, and skin without compromising the aesthetic results. Because the nipple must be repositioned during breast reduction, the incision encircles the entire areola. From the areola, a vertical incision bisects the lower portion of the breast and then meets with a curved incision along the underside of the breast. Dr. Bogdan removes excess breast tissue, skin, and fat through these incisions and, in some cases, reduces the size of the areolas. He repositions the nipple higher on the breast while it remains attached to nerves and blood vessels. Dr. Bogdan sutures the incisions and the result is a lifted and tightened breast that is more in proportion with the patient’s body.
Vertical Incision
A vertical breast reduction uses what is sometimes called a “lollipop” incision because it encircles the areola and then descends in a straight line. The result is similar to a lollipop shape. No horizontal incision near the base of the breast is necessary because Dr. Bogdan removes less breast tissue, fat, and skin during the procedure. This incision method is appropriate for women who require a lesser degree of reduction.
Optimal Results
Breast reduction surgery involves more than just making your breasts smaller. It is an aesthetic procedure that involves sculpting and re-shaping the breasts into a pleasing contour. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, it is critical that you choose a plastic surgeon with high levels of training, experience, and patient satisfaction, such as Dr. Bogdan. A surgeon with Dr. Bogdan’s skill and experience creates incisions with meticulous care, but some patients may still develop visible scarring. Dr. Bogdan thoroughly discusses scar care with each patient to ensure your results are cosmetically pleasing.
